Reducing risk through mitigation and preparedness actions has been proven more effective, and economically efficient than responding to and recovering from an emergency. The Nakusp Emergency Management Plan is based on the four pillars of emergency management: Mitigation, Preparation, Response, and Recovery. These four components are seen as a continuous loop that, when approached with a unified community effort, will result in a more resilient and sustainable community.
It takes a Community to save a Community. Now is the best time to prepare yourself, your family and your property for an emergency.
Mitigation
Mitigation strategies help reduce the risk of natural disasters. Many areas in BC are at high risk for wildfire, drought, and flooding. Wildfires are managed through a combination of prevention, mitigation, and suppression strategies on both public and private lands. The Village has been working with Nakusp and Area Community Forest (NACFOR) on Wildfire Risk Reduction in the wildland-urban interface to help protect the community and infrastructure. The Nakusp FireSmart program is also a great resource to help you with wildfire mitigation strategies for private land. Building a resilient community is everyone's responsibility.
Preparation
Pre-incident preparation and planning can drastically reduce the impacts of a disaster for anyone who may be affected. Prepared BC offers downloadable guides and fill-in-the-blank plans to help you prepare for emergencies. The Village of Nakusp uses VoyentAlert! for all emergency alerts. Signing up is easy, free, and does not require a smartphone or tablet. Emergency Support Services (ESS) are implemented by volunteers during an emergency and play a vital role for those in need of assistance. If you would like to help your community by volunteering for emergency response services, please contact the Emergency Program Coordinator.
Response
When an emergency occurs, it can require a collaborative response of many agencies to reduce potential impacts. The Village of Nakusp works closely with the RDCK and many other local agencies, to ensure an organized and effective response, through the implementation of our Emergency Response Plans. The safety and wellbeing of the people, property, environment, and economy of our community are the priority of our Emergency Management Team. Residents can do their part by staying informed and following evacuation alerts or orders.
Recovery
Recovery from a disaster consists of a range of activities designed to restore physical, social and economic conditions to pre-event levels. As our Province experiences larger and more frequent disasters, recovery becomes even more important. Building the resiliency and sustainability of a community is a proactive and inclusive approach that ensures a more efficient recovery.
