Recreation Master Plan

The Village of Nakusp is pleased to announce the launch of a comprehensive Recreation Master Plan. The Village has partnered with Quantum Recreation, a specialized consulting firm, to develop this important initiative to enhance recreational opportunities and services.

Public Open House - May 5, 2026

In collaboration with Quantum Recreation, the Village of Nakusp will be hosting a Public Open House to help confirm direction and refine the plan, including what we heard from the first Open House, what should the Village’s plan for the Arena be for the future, and more!

This will be held on Tuesday, May 5 2026 from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM at the Nakusp & District Sports Complex Auditorium, at 200 8th Ave NW.

Recreation Master Plan - What We Heard

Community engagement for the Recreation Master Plan occurred over three phases:

Phase One included the online community survey and the crowdsourcing tactic I.Contribute;
Phase Two - taking place from February 3-5, 2026 - included the first Open House, focus group meetings, and staff discussions; and
Phase Three - taking place from February 24-26, 2026 - included the second Open House, focus groups with business and tourism representatives, user groups, recreation-adjacent organizations, and students, and a Council and staff meeting.

In total, 571 residents, stakeholders, and staff participated throughout the engagement process.

There were 18 main themes identified throughout these three phases, including:

Recreation supports overall well-being;
Strong pride in existing recreation assets; and
Maintain and improve what exists first.

A "What We Heard" document was compiled after these three phases to ensure that these discussions can be reflected in the final Recreation Master Plan. Access this document below.

What's Next

With the "What We Heard" document now completed, there are three phases remaining for the Recreation Master Plan:

Phase Four will draft maintenance and lifecycle plans, for all facilities;
Phase Five will be the development of a draft Recreation Master Plan; and
Phase Six will be the finalization and presentation of the Recreation Master Plan.

The current estimated time of completion is May 2026; however, this is subject to change and updates will be provided when they are available.

Planning for the Future of Recreation

The Recreation Master Plan will provide a strategic framework for future recreation development, programming, and facilities based on community priorities and needs.

"This master planning process gives us a valuable opportunity to hear directly from residents about their vision for recreation in our community," said Cavan Gates, Director of Operations. "The input we receive will help shape recreational services in the Village of Nakusp for years to come."

Community Engagement Opportunities

Residents will have multiple opportunities to participate in the planning process:

Stakeholder Sessions: Meetings with key community organizations and interest groups
Public Open Houses: Community events where residents can learn about the project and share feedback
Community Survey: A comprehensive online survey on social media, at the Recreation Complex, Senior Centre and in person during the open house.

The community survey is a critical component of the planning process for understanding the community's needs. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on current recreation offerings and future priorities. The survey was open until February 27, 2026, and is now closed.

Public Open House - Wednesday, February 25 2026

In collaboration with Quantum Recreation, the Village of Nakusp hosted a Public Open House to share ideas and help shape the Recreation Master Plan, including facility satisfaction, access, barriers, participation, and future needs.

This was held on Wednesday, February 25 2026 from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM at the Nakusp Seniors Hall, 210 8th Ave NW.
