Managing Stormwater Runoff in the Village

Type(s)
News Release

This summer, extreme rainstorms caused water to pool on roads and private property. In some areas, road edges and alleys were eroded or washed out, leaving gravel and sand scattered across streets. This created poor walking and biking conditions, added extra work for Village crews, and increased maintenance costs.

How We’re Fixing It

Over the years, sand from winter operations has built up along Village boulevards (the shoulder beside streets and alleys). To improve drainage, we’ll be using a grader to reshape these boulevards so stormwater can flow off the road and naturally absorb into the ground.

Where Work Will Happen

Most of the problems appeared on sloped roads, but some flat areas also need attention. In some places, the work will be obvious (where water often pools), but other sections may also need grading to improve drainage now and prevent future issues. You may notice work being done along the boulevard beside your property.

What to Expect

As with most groundworks, it may look much worse before it looks better. The grader will disturb soils along the boulevard, and the results won’t be pretty at first. We know residents take pride in their yards, and we regret the temporary disruption — but this work is necessary to reduce flooding and erosion in the long term.

Responsibilities for Homeowners

Boulevard upkeep remains the responsibility of property owners under Village bylaws. The Village will be providing grass seed in the spring for anyone who wants to re-seed a grassy area.  Another option is to maintain a gravel parking area on the boulevard (as long as vehicles are insured and operational) – whichever works best for you.

Timeline

The work is currently scheduled for October 7th and 8th.

How You Can Help

To keep this project efficient and cost-effective:

  1. Remove any vehicles or materials from your boulevard. We’ll do our best to provide notice, but exact dates can’t be guaranteed.
  2. Please don’t approach the grader operator — give the equipment plenty of space. You may notice it’s YRB’s grader performing this maintenance, but if you have questions or concerns, be sure to contact the Village office directly.
Help Us Spread the Word

It’s difficult for the Village to notify everyone directly. If you know a neighbour who may not check our website or Facebook page, please pass this information along.
