Help Shape the Future of Nakusp’s Waterfront

The Village of Nakusp is moving into the second round of public engagement for the Waterfront Master Plan process. This is an important process for the community to shape the future of one of our most treasured assets—our scenic lakefront. Whether you’re a resident or visitor, your voice matters in helping to create a shared vision for this special place.

Project Background

The Council for the Village of Nakusp has commissioned a Waterfront Master Plan to guide the Village in repairing the Waterfront. The Plan is necessary because the infrastructure is starting to show its age, and underground infrastructure will need to be replaced in the near future. A completed Waterfront Master Plan will benefit the Village by displaying the Community's readiness and commitment to achieving the project when grant opportunities arise.

Surveying the Waterfront is the first step in the project; those orange 'Xs' along the Waterfront are part of this process. We are excited to announce upcoming opportunities to engage with the public to learn what citizens love about the Waterfront and any changes they desire. For example, do people want to see a public gathering place, better access to the water, cafes/business opportunities, and even how the Marina fits into the Waterfront? This is the Community's opportunity to dream big!

Stay Informed & Get Involved

Public Open House - On Monday, October 20, 2025, the Village will be hosting an Open House to present the draft conceptual design for the Waterfront Master Plan. This design builds on what we heard during our Open House and survey in spring 2025 and provides a visual representation of what the future of the waterfront could look like. The community will have a chance to review the design, give feedback, and ask questions. This feedback will help inform the final draft of the Waterfront Master Plan.

There were numerous aspects discussed at the spring Open House, including Event & Gathering Spaces, Marina & Waterfront, and Nature & Landscaping. A "What We Heard" document was compiled after this event to ensure that these discussions can be reflected in the final Waterfront Master Plan.

What is a Waterfront Master Plan?

A Waterfront Master Plan is a long-term planning document that guides how a waterfront area can evolve over time. It helps communities make thoughtful, informed decisions about:

Activities, amenities, and open space
Public access and trails
Environmental protection
Cultural and recreational opportunities
Connections to the rest of the community
Infrastructure and site furniture

These plans are shaped by community input and are meant to reflect the unique character, needs, and aspirations of the people who use and love the space.

Why is Nakusp Doing This Now?

Nakusp’s lakefront is already a beloved destination for both locals and visitors—and it’s seeing more use every year. With increasing interest and activity, it’s important to have a clear, community-driven plan that:

What You Need to Know

Your input matters. This is your waterfront, and your feedback will help shape how it looks and functions in the future.
It’s a long-term vision. The Master Plan won’t change things overnight. It will act as a roadmap to guide improvements over time.
Everyone is welcome. Whether you’re a long-time resident, a seasonal visitor, or new to the area, we want to hear from you.
There will be more chances to participate. This spring’s open house and survey are just the beginning—additional engagement is planned for Fall 2025.
